1. Pine Cone Bocce

What you need:

  • pine cones
  • acorn, small rock, or stick for marker

It makes it easier if you have different color cones for each team. Paint the pine cones or decorate them with sparkle glue to know which ones belong to each group.

How to play:

  1. One team or player tosses the marker.
  2. The teams throw their pine cones, trying to get as close to the marker as possible.

2. Capture The Pumpkin

Play this awesome fall game just like Capture the Flag but with pumpkins! So, the game’s object is to capture the other team’s pumpkin and bring it to your home base.

What you need:

  • Two pumpkins

Set up:

  • Form two teams.
  • Determine the boundaries and territories of each group.
  • Each team also picks a location for their jail and the pumpkin.
  • The pumpkin must be visible, and it can not be moved.
  • There is a safety zone “pumpkin patch” around the pumpkin (a 10 to 15 ft circle.)
  • The team that owns the pumpkin patch may not enter it unless the other team enters it first.

How to play:

  1. Each team sends a part of the team to the opposing team’s territory to capture their pumpkin. The team members staying behind guard their pumpkin.
  2. If you are tagged by the opposing team, you have to go to their jail.
  3. You can get out of jail if one of your team members tags you. (You can free only one person at a time.)
  4. After you capture the pumpkin, you must take it back to your territory without getting caught.
  5. If the person carrying the pumpkin gets caught, he must go to jail, and the pumpkin is returned to the pumpkin patch.

3. Candy Corn on the Cob *

This is a perfect game to be played minute-to-win-it style.

What you need:

  • bananas
  • candy corn

How to play:

  1. Give each player a peeled banana and a bag of candy corn.
  2. They have one minute to push the candy corn in the banana to make it look like corn on the cob.

4. Pass the Pumpkin

What you need:

  • A pumpkin for each team

How to play:

  1. The members of each team form a line.
  2. The first person of each group passes the pumpkin over his head.
  3. Next one between his legs.
  4. Third one over his head and so on.
  5. When the last person gets the pumpkin, he runs to the front of the line and passes the pumpkin over his head.
  6. Continue until everyone is back in their original positions.

5. Pumpkin Hunt *

What you need:

  • pumpkins or images of pumpkins

How to play:

  1. Hide the pumpkins in the game area.
  2. Send the players to look for a specific pumpkin or to find as many pumpkins as they can.

6. Candy Corn Relay *

What you need:

  • a big bowl
  • a container for each team
  • a spoon for each team

How to play:

  1. Place the candy corn in a bowl and place it between the teams. Put the empty containers at the other end of the game space. One container for each group.
  2. Give each team a spoon.
  3. One player at a time from each game takes the spoon and scoops up candy corns.
  4. Then he runs to take the candy corn to the empty container. The player then runs back and gives the spoon to the next player.
  5. The team that has more candy in the bowl wins.

8. Pumpkin Bowling *

This might sound like a game for little kids, but since it can make a mess, I can see teens liking it.

What you need:

  • 10 bowling pins or 2-liter soda bottles filled with sand to make them harder to knock over
  • pumpkins

How to play:

  1. Set up the bowling pins and mark a throw line.
  2. Give each kid a pumpkin or a couple.
  3. The kids roll or throw their pumpkins to knock over the pins.

9. Scarecrow Tag

How to play:

  1. One person is chosen to be a tagger (Have 2 or more taggers if you have a large group.)
  2. The players run around and try to avoid being tagged.
  3. If they’re tagged, they must freeze and stand like a scarecrow with their arms spread out. (You could also have them spread their legs if you want them to be set free by someone crawling between their legs.)
  4. They can be set free by someone tapping their arm or crawling between their legs.
  5. The game goes on until everyone is caught or the time is up, and a new tagger is chosen.

What you need:

  • straws
  • leaves

How to play:

  1. The object of the game is to get your leaf to the designated spot by using the straw as your leaf blower.

What you need:

  • Apple Jacks cereal or Cheerios
  • chenille stems

How to play:

  1. Give each player some cereal and a chenille stem.
  2. The players try to thread cereal onto the chenille stem by using only one hand.

  1. Hold the stick parallel to the ground.
  2. The players go under the stick, bending knees and leaning as far back as they can.

13. Scarecrow in the Field

What you need:

  • scarecrow clothes for each team: straw hat, flannel shirt, overalls, scarf, boots

How to play:

  1. Set up a pile of clothes for each team at one end of the game area.
  2. Line up the teams in the other end.
  3. One player at a time from each team runs to the pile of clothes and puts them on. Then he makes a quick pose, takes them off, and runs back to the team; then the next person goes.

What you need:

  • acorns
  • plastic cups

How to play:

  1. Divide the group into teams of two.
  2. Give a plastic cup to one person on each team.
  3. Give acorns to the other team members.
  4. The person with the acorns throws them, and the person with the cup tries to catch them. The team that captures all the acorns first wins.
  5. Make the game a little more challenging by having the acorn tosser throw them over his shoulder or while blindfolded.

18. Jack O Lantern Race

What you need:

  • pumpkins (You could draw a face on the pumpkin with a permanent marker)

How to play:

  1. Each player balances a pumpkin on their head and runs to the finish line without dropping it.

19. Leaf Stepping *

What you need:

  • leaves cut out from construction paper

How to play:

  1. Give a leaf to each team member. Plus on extra.
  2. They line up the leaves and step on them. The extra one is placed in front of the first person in line.
  3. The object is to get to the finish line by stepping only on the leaves.
  4. Everyone steps on the leaf right in front of them.
  5. The last person picks up the leaf he was just standing on and passes it to the team member first in line, who then puts it in front of her and steps on it, and so on.
  6. The team that first reaches the finish line like this wins.

20. Pumpkin Scoop *

What you need:

  • pumpkins, cut in half.
  • spoons or scoops
  • bowls

How to play:

  1. Give each player a pumpkin and a scoop.
  2. Place a bowl for each player at the other end of the play area.
  3. The players scoop up the pumpkin pulp and carry it on the scoop to their bowls.
  4. The one who has the most pulp in the bowl wins.

21. Flashlight Tag

This is a great night-time game for a large group. A game that even the teens will like.

What you need:

  • A flashlight (two or more if you have a large group)

How to play:

  1. One person is chosen to be “it.”
  2. The others hide.
  3. The “it” looks for them with the flashlight. Whoever is found first becomes the next “it.”

22. Ghost In the Graveyard

This is an excellent night-time active outdoor game for teens and tweens.

What you need:

  • Flashlights

How to play:

  1. Decide the location of the base, “the safe.”
  2. Depending on the size of your crowd, pick a few people to be the “ghosts.”
  3. The ghosts hide.
  4. The other players look for them with the flashlights.
  5. When a player finds a ghost he shouts, “ghost in the graveyard.” That player is safe.
  6. All the other players run back to the base. The ghost(s) chase them and try to tag them.
  7. Whoever gets tagged becomes an additional ghost for the next round.
